Continuing our "Flite Wear" line of historic fitted Recovery Ship Hats, we are proud to introduce the APOLLO 15, USS OKINAWA astronaut recovery cap! This style cap, with USAF senior officer "farts & darts" on the brim, was worn by Astronauts Dave Scott, Al Worden, and Jim Irwin after splashdown recovery August 7, 1971 in the northern Pacific Ocean.
The original caps were not personalized with the names of the Apollo crew like they were on most other recovery missions. Similar caps, without the brim detail, were also available for the crew of OKINAWA.
These are fitted hats, and have no elastic band or adjustment. Please see the size chart below, paying close attention to the measurements. These hats run loose when new, about one size larger than usual. Order a size down if you want a tighter fit right out of the box.
These replicate the hats worn aboard recovery ships during the 1960s and 70s for the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo program.
Based on the original "Harvard" brand hats used by the US Navy for crew baseball caps, we have recreated these hats exactly like the originals including:
- Navy blue wool shell material
- Green glare-reducing underbrim material
- White leather with red trim sweatband
- Sewn vent holes
- Individually machine stitched embroidered crown and brim patches
Just like the originals, these come in fitted sizes rather than the modern stretch or tab hats. Feel proud to wear this hat in the 50th Anniversary year and for years to come!
Please see the size chart below, paying close attention to the measurements. These hats slightly loose when new. Order a size down if you prefer a tighter fit right out of the box. Size exchanges and returns are possible but buyer will pay shipping. CONTACT US with any size questions before you purchase.
